ISLA MUJERES, Q, Roo — Three agents of the General Direction of Public Safety and Municipal Transit were suspended in Isla Mujeres and are in the process of being investigated.

The agents, whose names were not revealed, are accused of not intervening in order to avoid an incident between local taxi drivers and the occupants of a private car during the weekend of Oct. 21-22, in the Continental Zone of the Isla Mujeres municipality.

Jaime Ongay Ortiz, head of the police force, stated that in cases such as this, it is the responsibility of the police officers to notify the corresponding authorities — the Transport Directorate of Sintra — and to avoid conflicts that could result in public order disturbance.

However, according to one of the parties involved, the agents stood still, only acted as observers and failed to intervene, while they may have prevented injuries and damage to property of others.

“Because of alleged deficiencies in the proceeding of these three officers, we request their resignation, while the investigation and disclaimer of responsibility corresponding in these cases are carried out. This provision was in compliance with the current police statutes and regulations,” informed the police chief.

Ongay Ortiz stressed that the instruction of the municipal president, Juan Carrillo Soberanis, has been very clear: that public servants always act with transparency and within the framework of the law. If an officer is flagged for some omission, he must assume responsibility.

In that sense, the party allegedly affected was ordered to follow the legal procedure, and go to the Attorney General’s Office to file their complaint.

“Due to their conduct, the agents are separated from the corporation, while the corresponding investigations are carried out,” said the police chief.

It is worth mentioning the municipal authorities rapid attention to the faults committed by the police officers.

“In Isla Mujeres the municipal government is committed to maintaining peace and security throughout its territory,” Ongay Ortiz concluded.
