MERIDA — Despite low numbers in some of the cemeteries of the city, thousands of people attended to their annual meetings to celebrate their deceased on Wednesday Nov. 1.
The festivities begin on October 28, the date on which people who died in an accident are remembered; On October 30, babies who died before being baptized are remembered; On October 31, children under 12 are celebrated; All Saints Day is November 1 and those who died of natural causes or illness are remembered; and on November 2, after 12 pm, according to the belief, the souls of the deceased are gone, and the offerings are collected and the altars are raised.
The Nov. 1 activities were marked by contrasts at the cemeteries Xoclán and General: in the former the families went as usual, while in the latter, there were few families celebrating along with their dead relatives.
The Cemetery of Xoclán is considered the most desired by the people, while the General Cemetery looks forgotten and deteriorated.
Employees of the place indicated that low visitor influx was because of the date: this year the “Dia de Muertos” occurred at midweek, and many people had to work all day.
For their part, many relatives of the deceased believe that during these days they should not talk about the way in which they died, but remember them in the best possible way.
