PLAYA DEL CARMEN — Tourists from the states of Texas, California and Florida top the list of visitors from the United States to the Riviera Maya, according to the “Tourist Profile Study in Quintana Roo” (Estudio del Perfil Turista de Quintana Roo).

The document published at the end of last month highlights that the US, with 36.8% of the total four million tourists that arrive at the destination, is the country that contributes with the largest number of visitors to Cancun and the Riviera Maya.

It is also reported that most of the national tourism comes from Mexico City and Nuevo León, with 20.8% and 19.8% respectively, from a total of one million Mexican visitors.

The data was collected during this year’s third quarter, from July to September, by the Secretary of Tourism of Quintana Roo (Sedetur). The statistics were obtained through a survey conducted directly with visitors.

It is reported that 74.6% come to Cancun and the Riviera Maya for pleasure in search of sun and beach, 8% for honeymoon and 5.8% to learn more about the Mayan culture; also that 63% stay at “all inclusive” resorts; 8.8% use their timeshare and 3% stay at conventional hotels (non all inclusive).

At least 3.2% of tourists arriving in the Riviera Maya stayed overnight in Tulum, 1.6% in Cancun and 1.2% in Cozumel. After the visit to the destination, 70% had a feeling of relaxation, 14% of adventure and 11% of romance.

Besides, the rate of return is 45.2% of the total number of tourists arriving annually, who have returned more than twice to the Riviera Maya.

Maria Elena Mata Pineda, president of the Business Coordinating Council (Consejo Coordinador Empresarial), said that this report provides a good parameter for hoteliers and tourism service providers, in order to continue with the promotion programs, also considered that the high origin of visitors from the southern United States, could be because there are many Mexican-American living in those states.
