Mérida to host one of the presidential debates in June

Moderators will have an active role in the debates, and citizen participation is contemplated…

MERIDA – In its first extraordinary session, the Temporary Committee of Debates of the National Electoral Institute (INE) approved the Basic Rules for holding debates between candidates for the Presidency of the Republic during the Federal Electoral Process 2017-2018, at the which is defined, among other aspects, the realization of three debates in Mexico City, Tijuana and Mérida, as well as the fundamental characteristics that moderation and citizen participation should observe.

Debate Date, Time and Location:

  • First debate: Sunday, April 22, 2018; 8:00 pm; Mexico City.
  • Second debate: Sunday, May 20, 2018; 8:00 pm; Tijuana, Baja California.
  • Third debate: Tuesday June 12, 2018; 9:00 pm; Mérida, Yucatán.

The debates will be mainly about previously established topics and there will be general, specific or personalized questions on the topic of the discussion. Free discussion will be avoided. The candidates for the Presidency of the Republic will not know the questions that are established previously for each exercise.

The Basic Rules also contemplate that different mechanisms are carried out to guarantee the direct or indirect participation of citizens.

The Temporary Committee of Debates, chaired by the counselor Benito Nacif, also approved amendments to Article 307 of the Election Regulations to modify the deadline established for the appointment of the moderators who will participate in each of the debates to the Presidency of the Republic, which will allow having more elements to choose those who have the most appropriate profiles for the performance of this function, explained the counselor.
