Cockfights will remain illegal in Yucatan: legislator

The Tekax Council initiative to declare cockfights as Human Heritage will not be approved, legislative leader declares…

MERIDA – As reported previously here on TYT, the Tekax city council was seeking to promote an initiative, on their own, to recognize cockfights as Immaterial Human Heritage, a level that only the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) can declare. Now with information from the Diario de Yucatán, the TYT team brings you the response to that initiative from a high level Yucatecan politician.

The vice president of the Environment Committee of the State Congress, Enrique Febles Bauzá, stated that the Cabildo de Tekax proposal to declare cockfights as Intangible Cultural Heritage has no legal validity.

He assured that it is illegal because it violates the Law of Protection of Fauna, and he also remarked that the Tekax council does not have the needed attributions to make such a declaration.

“Clearly the decision taken on Friday October 20 in Tekax has no legal validity, and the principal reason is that it is an initiative that is against a Federal Law,” he reiterated.
