MERIDA — The company Medam S. de R.L. of CV, located in the exit to Caucel at Merida’s Peripheral road, exceeded authorized limits for the collection of Infectious Biological Residues and caused the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) to impose a fine of $1,283,330 pesos ($67,109 USD), as well permanently close its facilities.
Profepa definitively closed the company’s facilities, due to the mishandling of hazardous waste and ordered the final disposal of all the waste that is in its possession, but through a company authorized for that purpose.
It should be remembered that the same agency temporarily closed Medam last October, after an inspection in which it detected a breach of environmental regulations that also put health and the environment at risk.
The lack of good management detected consisted in the storage of these hazardous wastes above the authorized capacity, as well as not presenting the registry as a generator of non-anatomical hazardous waste.
Besides that at the time of the visit, these residues were found outdoors, on compacted soil and in areas of natural soil, which represents an imminent and serious risk to the environment and human health.
Then once the corresponding terms of the law had elapsed, the definitive total closure of the company’s facilities was ordered, and the fine was determined, based on article 112, sections I and V of the General Law for the Prevention and Integral Waste Management, in relation to article 106, sections II and XIV of the same Law.
