Aeromexico is looking to suspend Merida-Miami service

Tourism chief confirms that Aeromexico seeks to suspend Merida-Miami flights because the route isn’t profitable any more…

MERIDA — Yucatan’s Secretary of Tourism Promotion, Saul Ancona Salazar, confirmed on Tuesday November 14 that Aeromexico considers suspending its flights from Merida to Miami for a profitability decision.

The airline has not defined yet if this suspension will be temporarily or permanently, so the state government is in talks with the company with the hope that there is some scheme that allows the profitability it needs.

Ancona Salazar reported that Aeromexico has had this air route from Merida to Miami for more than 30 years and now faces competition and apparently does not have good financial numbers on this route. However, the secretary said that Yucatan is not disconnected from the United States because the Merida-Miami route is still operated by American Airlines and the Merida-Houston route through United Airlines, which has five flights a week.

He also confirmed that on December 1, they will resume the Atlanta-Merida-Atlanta route through Aeroméxico’s partner Delta Airlines, a US company that had covered this route in the government of Patricio Patrón Laviada and also withdrew due to low profitability.

Aeromexico maintains its reservations on its web portal for the Merida-Miami route until February 2018, so it will continue its flights in its customary schedules until the suspension of this route is completed.

“They still haven’t made a final decision, but if they improve their numbers in December, January and February (2018) the current scenario could change,” said the official.

Also the head of Sefotur is in talks to renegotiate the possible return, for the 2018 summer vacation, of the airline Blue Panorama that covered the route Milan-Merida-Cancun-Milan that was also canceled due to low profitability.
