The largest cruise convention and trade show in the Caribbean and Latin America is coming to Merida and Progreso next week, and local officials are scrambling to get ready for the high-profile visitors.
The Florida-Caribbean FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade Show will take place principally in Mérida from October 23-27. The event will gather around 1,000 private and public stakeholders and 100 cruise executives for a series of meetings, workshops and networking and promotional opportunities.
Preparations already have been underway for days in Progreso to improve the image of the entrance of the city, which will be visited by these cruise line executives, travel agents and other convention participants.
To prepare for this important tourism event, since last Friday staff of Progreso Public Works have been performing general maintenance work at the premises of the local taxi drivers union, located on Calles 78 and 80 between 21 and 23, near the malecon, since it is likely that the building will be visited by representatives of the cruise companies.
Meanwhile, the lot where the artisan markets take place will be paved. Heavy machinery is being employed in the paving, while municipal workers also are painting fences.
In addition, on Calle 78, at the entrance to the port, Public Works staff are filling potholes and repairing water line leaks.
