Heightened police presence will remain permanent until the end of the year, in support of locals and tourists….
MERIDA — The new model of work hours of the Municipal Police of Mérida (PMM) working 12 hours followed by rest for 24 hours, is having a good impact on crime reduction in the downtown area, said Municipal Police director, Mario Arturo Romero Escalante.
The commander announced the beginning of the operation for “Día de Muertos” celebrations, whose tasks will extend until the end of the year, including “El Buen Fin” and the Christmas season.
The official recalled that the new schedule has increased efficiency of police work and assured that it can be appreciated in the reduction of robberies in downtown. He also mentioned that most frequent crimes are cell-phone or wallet theft, which is a non-violent crime because sometimes people do not even realize at the moment of being robbed.
Romero Escalante added that when people notify police officers in the next five to ten minutes after the crime, the possibility of arresting the alleged thief is between 70% and 80%, because they apply proven protocols to find and capture thieves.
“We believe it will be a busy year-end in the Historic Center, especially in December, when all the people do their shopping and double the number of people who come to this site,” said the offical.
