Dismembered body is part of violent weekend in Cancun

CANCÚN — The discovery of a dismembered body in black trash bags that were thrown in the street in the colony Los Girasoles Rancho Viejo concluded one of the most violent weekends in Cancun in recent memory and which included at least 10 people shot.

At 9:30 p.m. on Sunday Oct. 1, in Region 103, men aboard a blue car fired point-blank at a person riding a motorcycle. The man was hit by as many as seven bullets.

Shortly after 10 pm another person was reported shot in Region 259, in the Las Palmas neighborhood. At midnight, shots were reported at an establishment in Region 231, known as “El Tío Toño,” on Kabah Avenue, before reaching Niños Héroes. In this incident two people were reported injured.

On Monday morning the dismembered body in plastic bags was discovered, in Los Girasoles, on the mainland of Isla Mujeres.

It was specified that the body was a man between 40 and 45 years old, without identification.

In another case, a 5-year-old Colombian boy who was vacationing in Cancun with his family drowned after accidentally falling into the pool of a hotel on Kukulkán Avenue.

The mother of the child, Y.G.G., 39, originally from Sabido Blanco, Colombia, identified the body.

On the other hand, the State Commission of Human Rights verified two cases of torture committed by judicial officers, currently of the Attorney General’s Office, informed the Quintana Roo ombusdman, Harley Sosa Guillén.

In both cases the offenders were arrested and tortured by state judicial agents to plead guilty.

Sosa Guillén indicated that the material damage will be reimbursed to each one.
