Here is a list compiled by El Universal of natural and archeological attractions not to be missed in the state of Quintana Roo….

A premium destination internationally, Quintana Roo boasts lush nature, pristine beaches, impressive Mayan ruins and a wide range of hotels, gastronomy and entertainment (notably golf courses, theme parks and spas) with environments ranging from the cosmopolitan and trendy resorts of Cancun and the Riviera Maya, to the bohemian and relaxed atmosphere of Cozumel, Holbox, Isla Mujeres, Tulum and Bacalar.

Destinations not to be missed

In Cancun: El Rey and El Meco archeological sites, Wet’n Wild water park and Interactive Aquarium, Humane Conservation certified.

In Cozumel: San Gervasio – Ixchel’s manor, fertility goddess -, the Cedral Temple, Royal Castle, El Caracol, Santa Rita, Ixpal Barco and Xhanan; the Palancar National Park, the Chankanaab Nature Park, Punta Sur Ecological Reserve and Discover Mexico theme park.

In Riviera Maya: Coba, Tulum, the impressive Aktunchen caves, the cenotes Dos Ojos and Chinuch, Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, and the group of theme parks: Xcaret, Xoximilco, Xplor and Xel-Ha.

Other jewels of Quintana Roo: the National Park Reefs of Xcalak, in Majahual; the cenote Yalahau (half an hour by boat from Holbox); the Laguna de Bacalar; the Biosphere Reserve of
Yum Balam; Isla Contoy (30 kilometers north of Isla Mujeres); the Arrecife National Park Puerto Morelos and Garrafón, in Isla Mujeres.

The best events of the year

Sacred Maya Crossing: intense rafting, in honor of the goddess Ixchel. The route begins in the Xcaret park and concludes in Chankanaab, Cozumel. The next day, the boatmen return to
Xcaret. It takes place in May.

Lol Cah: Mayan ceremony dedicated to Chaac, god of rain. In September.

Whale sharks: the world’s largest fish comes from June to September. Sightings in areas of Holbox and Isla Mujeres.

Joyá: Gastronomic-theatrical spectacle of the Cirque du Soleil at the Teatro Vidanta, in Riviera Maya.
