CANCUN — A police couple was shot to death on Saturday night Sept. 16 in the parking lot of the Gran Plaza shopping center in Cancun.
According to preliminary information, those executed are two ministerial police officers from Playa del Carmen. The woman’s body was lying on the pavement a few meters from one of the entrances to the mall. The man also received several bullet wounds and was found few meters away from his wife, also in the parking lot.
The events occurred when several subjects with long-arms arrived to the Plaza and fired on Major Julio Cesar Durán Cardenas and his partner, Chadrey Lugo, as well as his 8-month-old nephew who was in the commander’s arms.

Both victims ended up lifeless in the middle of the parking lot, not too far from each other. The 8-month baby was also hit by the bullets and was transferred in a private vehicle to a IMSS hospital.
The executed couple reportedly were employees of the Office of the Prosecutor of the Ministerial Police, assigned to Playa del Carmen.

Unofficially, it was reported that the ministerial police officer was known as ‘El Chilango‘ or ‘El Comandante Diablo‘, and he had been threatened in “narcomantas” a few days earlier in Playa del Carmen.
The shooting caused panic and nervous breakdowns among several people who were at the shopping center with their families.
Police closed Nichupte Avenue and other streets surrounding Gran Plaza to attend the emergency. The area was cordoned off to gather evidence of the case.
129 executions have been registered in Quintana Roo so far this year, 13 of them just in the month of September.
