MERIDA – Despite the decrease in the suicide rate for Yucatán registered this past month by the Public Health Secretariat, the state still has the highest suicide rate among Mexico’s 32 states.
So it is due to this fact that the specialist Laura Hernández Ruiz, PhD and professor in Anthropology of the Peninsular Center in Humanities and Social Sciences of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, said that Wednesday September 13 a conference was behing held to mark the 2nd Regional Suicide Prevention Day 2017. The conference was set to analyze strategies for prevention and intervention of violence in the Yucatan peninsula.
She explained that the program consisted of 7 conferences with outstanding speakers that discussed aspects of the methodologies of emotions, violence in Yucatan, anthropology and violence on suicide in Quintana Roo and Yucatan; violence and suicide conditions in Campeche; suicide mapping from journalistic notes, as a basis for social intervention, among others.
“We seek with these workshops to outline strategies for the prevention and intervention of violence to reduce the number of suicide cases in the Yucatan peninsula,” she said.
Hernández Ruiz highlighted that this event took place within the framework of the World Day for Suicide Prevention, and addressed some aspects on the problem of violence and suicide in Yucatan, Quintana Roo and Campeche.
The Second Regional Suicide Prevention Conference included renowned guest academics such as Silvia Gutiérrez Vidrio, a researcher at UAM-Unidad Xochimilco; Eliana Cárdenas Méndez, Uqroo professor-researcher; Moisés Frutos Cortés of the Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences of the UAC, Campeche; in addition, Javier Rivera Domínguez, Raúl Enrique Silveira Sáenz, Luis Alberto Vázquez Pérez and Juan de Dios Barrueta Rath.
