ISLA MUJERES, Q. Roo — Due to the strong waves caused by the remnants of hurricane “Irma” that hit Florida, Isla Mujeres presented a phenomenon known as “storm surge” (mar de tormenta), which caused waves of up to 3 meters (10 feet) high in the eastern part of the island.
Due to this situation, appropriate measures were taken by local authorities to guarantee the safety of islanders and visitors.
Ulises Berman Graniel, coordinator of Civil Protection in Isla Mujeres, urged the public to follow the recommendations of the authorities and keep alert during this hurricane season, emphasizing that the culture of prevention is fundamental for the people of Isla Mujeres.
He reported that when hurricane “Irma” was off the coast of Florida, its effects produced high tide and strong waves in the eastern shore of Isla Mujeres, where uncommon waves of up to 3 meters high were reported on Sunday September 10.
“These conditions are due to hurricane Irma, and even when this situation does not pose any danger to the people of Isla Mujeres, four coastal municipalities in the north of Quintana Roo are now with red flag, which means that people are not allowed to swim in the ocean,” warned the official.
