CAMPECHE — Despite the inauguration of the Mega Drainage held by Mexico’s President Enrique Peña Nieto on Tuesday August 8, the same day that Tropical Storm Franklin reached the city of San Francisco de Campeche, the city suffered the effects of unpredictable nature by facing massive flooding and the collapse of a hill.

It’s worth to mention that while the Mega Drainage was in EPN’s campaign commitments, in fact it was built and was put into operation more than two years ago, during the term of ex-governor Fernando Ortega Bernés and the triennium of the former Mayor Ana Martha Escalante Castillo.
The night of Monday August 7, after his disastrous visit to Chiapas, Peña Nieto landed in Campeche and took refuge in the safest place: the mansion of Governor Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas, where he has been plotting the next national assembly of his party, the PRI.

The heavy rainfall that occurred late Tuesday August 8 caused severe flooding in large areas of the city of Campeche, so that state and municipal authorities, in coordination with the Navy and the Mexican Army, proceeded to help the population.
However the “Dr. Patricio Trueba de Regil” ISSSTE hospital was affected by the collapse of a contiguous hill, which forced those responsible for this institution to evacuate the hospitalized patients, who were taken aboard ambulances to other hospitals in the city.

The damage caused by the rain has not yet been quantified, but is estimated to be large. Several vehicles were literally swept away by the heavy storm.
