The PRD is working on legal moves and protests to stop the federal government initiative to start oil extraction in Yucatan waters….
In response to the tender for exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons on the coast of Yucatan to be launched by the National Hydrocarbons Commission in January 2018, at the local level politicans are preparing legal resources against that, because tourism and fishing activity will be strongly affected.
The state president of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), Alejandro Cuevas Mena, said on Wednesday August 2 that the tender is against the interests of the Yucatecans because it will put at risk the fishing of the state, the Alacranes Reef, tourism, tranquility and state security, when an influx of outsiders begin arriving, as happened in Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche.
“Today all these attractions that Yucatan has are threatened due to the Bid 2.4 announced by the Energy Secretariat scheduled for the end of January. We call on the Yucatecans to join us and not allow Yucatan to become an oil zone and that what is happening today in the states of Campeche and Tabasco, where after the oil came organized crime, kidnapping and extortion as a the way of life of people who have lost their income.”
Cuevas Mena said they are reviewing with a group of lawyers the promotion of legal resources to not allow Yucatan to be an oil zone, and that they will also protest in a peaceful way.
“In the previous legislature of the Chamber of Deputies, the PRI and the PAN voted in favor of an energy reform that the PRD opposed as it delivered hydrocarbons and energy policy to private companies, both foreign and domestic. As a member of the Energy Commission in the last Legislature we pointed out that this was an attempt against the Mexicans because it started from many aspects such as withdrawing the exclusivity of Pemex in the exploitation and exploration of hydrocarbons and shared it with private companies. In its energy policy to the state and pondered the participation of private industry,” said Cuevas Mena.
Cuevas said the Yucatan coast has one of the largest oil fields in the world, including five times that of Cantarell in Campeche.
