During high season, the airport has reinforced security throughout the facility, and on flights to the United States, they have implemented a final review at the entrance of the
airplane….
MERIDA — The high season of arrival of travelers to the international airport of the city of Mérida has prompted extra security measures on the part of terminal operator ASUR and of airlines that travel to U.S. destinations, said the director of the Airport Group of the Southeast (Asur), Hector Navarrete Muñoz.
The airport official said that earlier this month airlines flying to North American cities began applying an extra review before boarding the plane, especially on items such as laptops, tablets, cameras, video games or other devices.
“We have a constant review of all the security elements at the airport, our work to ensure safety of the whole terminal is incessant, we are still in high season and security is the raison d’être of an airport,” he said.
He detailed that these revisions before boarding the aircraft are carried out as part of the extraordinary security measures for
electronic devices imposed by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for flights to the neighboring country.
In an interview, Héctor Navarrete explained that although in the Merida terminal a revision is made when entering the secure zone, since the beginning of the high season, airlines flying to the United States make this final review at the entrance of the plane with people contracted by the airline and not by the airport.
“The United States has asked airlines flying to its territory to take special care to do a review before getting on the plane, the reviews are made by airlines before entering the aircraft,” he said.
He indicated that the review is done before boarding and in the waiting area, where there is a table for the process, and this applies to all passengers traveling from any part of the Mexican Republic to the United States.
Navarrete Muñoz, asserted that authorities such as the Federal Police conduct their own reviews at various points in the
air terminal of the city of Mérida, mainly for products prohibited by Mexican law.
“The Federal Police and the military carry out their review work exhaustively, especially to avoid acts of illicit origin, that has long been part of the sealing program of the Peninsula,” he said.
