Merida police training in English to wrap in August

Taught by the “London House Academy” in coordination with the Directorate of Tourism and Economic Development of Merida, this English workshop lasts 26 hours, concluding in August. In April, this same group of police officers finished the first stage of this course, which seeks to give better attention to tourists who do not speak Spanish and are visiting the Centro.

MÉRIDA — While addressing the participating officers, the Director of the Municipal Police, Commander Mario Arturo Romero Escalante, mentioned that Mérida is a city with a tourist vocation, and due to all the tourists visiting the city, specifically the Centro, the services that police provide should be improved.

Romero Escalante expressed how important it is to have an adequate preparation in regards to speaking English. “Most tourists come to police agents to assist them whenever they have a problem, and language is a barrier if the officers do not speak English. Therefore, the Mayor Mauricio Vila wants the city to be fully-equipped with people who are properly trained to provide a good service to anyone visiting.”

Lastly, he urged the police agents to give their best during this English course, as it will have a lot of benefits, not only for them, but also for foreign tourists and visitors.

In representation of the Directorate of Tourism and Economic Development of Merida, Sabrina of Jesus Romero Lopez, head of the aforementioned agency, was present.
