The cities of Merida, Morelia and Xalapa are among the three most economical cities for a college student, while Mexico, Monterrey and Guadalajara represent the most expensive ones, El Debate newspaper reports.
MÉRIDA — A survey conducted by Dada Room, a platform that assists people who are looking to share an appartment, released information on how much it costs to be a college student in 15 major cities of Mexico, and how economically appealing these are. The rating was made by comparing five key factors in the expenditure of a young university student, which include transportation, food, housing, accommodation and alcoholic drinks.
The final ranking is made up of cities such as Mexico, Monterrey, Guadalajara, municipality of Zapopan, Tijuana, Querétaro, Puebla, San Luis Potosí, Culiacán, Toluca, Chihuahua, Tuxtla Gutierrez, Hermosillo, Morelia, Xalapa and Mérida. The last three are considered the most economic and attractive.

The indicators establish that in the country’s capital (CDMX) there are a total of 73 public universities, with an enrollment of 652 thousand students. However, the average accommodation cost for a young person can easily exceed $4,800 pesos per month, while in Merida they can pay around $1,800 pesos. The second most expensive city is Monterrey, with an average expenditure of $6,115, followed by Guadalajara along with Zapopan with $5,409, and Tijuana with $5,548.
Likewise, monthly transportation expenses in Monterrey could exceed $330 pesos per month, while in Morelia and Mérida this expense represents an increase of no more than $240 pesos per month.
Regarding spending on food, the capital proved to be the most expensive with about $3,000 per month, while Merida was the most economical, with an average expenditure of $2,100. Additionally, buying beer in Mérida will save you some money, as the average price is $33 pesos or lower, while in other more expensive states, it costs $40 or more.
