According to La Crónica de Hoy newspaper, in response to the increment in attacks on women by their partners, whether married or unmarried, Nancy Walker Olvera, head of the NGO Alternative Social Sciences, requested assistance from the Women’s National Institute.

She stressed that the latest crimes committed against women position Yucatan in the fourth national place with extreme cases. “In extreme violent circumstances, 50 percent of women were kicked, tied, strangled, choked, stabbed or injured with a firearm.”

In addition, 36.4 percent had to receive medical or psychological care, hospitalization or surgery, as a result of their partner’s violent behavior towards them. The remaining 22.6 percent suffered cuts, burns, tooth loss, bone fractures, abortions, immobility, or the death of a household member.

According to the National Survey on the Dynamics of Household Relationships (ENDIREH), 47 out of 100 women aged 15 or over, married or unmarried, were victims of violence by their husbands or partners at some point in their lives, positioning Yucatan in the 4th national place among Mexican states regarding domestic violence.
