With the arrival of summer, Mérida leads the top five of the national destinations that had a noticeable increase in booking travel packages. Mérida beats destinations such as Guadalajara, Ixtapa and Cabo San Lucas.

According to an analysis conducted by despegar.com, the leading travel agency in Latin America, the Yucatecan capital, as was the case with Easter, is in the first place for travel booking during the summer. As stated by the company, which was created in 1999 and which is present in 21 countries, Mérida is the first choice Mexican travellers want to visit during their summer holidays.

“The way Mexicans are planning trips is changing, due to the desire of tourists looking for packages and discounts. We observed that they are booking up to three months in advance, which is most likely because of the current economic situation,” said Francisco Ceballos, Country Manager of Despegar Mexico.

According to El Semanario, regarding tourists’ intended length of stay, they noticed that for a national trip, people usually stay around five days, but for international destinations they stay around a week or so.

Another fact that was observed from the study was that travellers who book their packages try to do it beforehand and with full-service options, such as flight tickets, lodging, food, activities and car rental. By doing so, they can save up to 35 percent more when acquiring all tourist services in a single purchase.
