Deadly shooting in Tulum, fifth incident in the last month

TULUM, Q. Roo — On Monday evening June 19, just one block from the city hall building in the tourist paradise of Tulum, six shots were heard.

On the corner of Osiris and Polar Street, while crossing the street, a young man was shot dead and a woman suffered severe injuries as a gun was fired from a car. A crowd quickly gathered and despite the proximity of the town hall, where police are on duty all day, locals surrounded the area fully before any police arrived at the scene. As police showed up the ambulance took a further fifteen minutes.

At the time of writing the woman is said to be in stable condition at a hospital in Playa del Carmen.

The shootings come in a time when Tulum is experiencing a previously unseen amount of violence, with this being the fifth shooting in the last month. As with previous shootings in the town this year, the assailants remain at large.
