The National Council for Preventing Discrimination (Conapred) launched a national campaign to combat prejudice against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersexual (LGBTI) collectives and recognize the value of inclusion.
With this campaign “is intended to counter ideas that associate homosexuality with a pathology and confuse sexual orientation with gender identity,” the Conapred said in a statement.
It also seeks to celebrate sexual diversity, promote the recognition of rights for all people, and combat existing stigmas and stereotypes towards LGBTI persons.
As part of the initiative, the agency launched an ad that shows a young man introducing his family members, including a single mother, a heterosexual and a homosexual couples, and concludes: “We are all different and we respect each other.”
“Love is greater than differences, an inclusive Mexico includes you,” said the announcement.
To mark the start of the campaign, activists, academics and civil society organizations held a meeting called “Peace Room: Against Homophobia and Inclusion”.
Seven out of ten LGBTI people have felt discriminated in educational institutions, while half of this population claims to have experienced, at least once, harassment or discrimination cases at work, according to a report supported by the Arcoiris Foundation.
Between 2011 and 2016, Conapred analyzed a total of 841 cases related to acts of discrimination based on sexual orientation or identity and gender expression.
One in four of these cases is linked to discrimination in the workplace, so that the institution provided, in the framework of the campaign, data related to the “benefits of labor inclusion of the LGBTI community.”
In Mexico, the LGBTI market generates 74.4 billion dollars. According to Conapred, employees of the inclusive companies are more committed to the success of the company (84%) than those of the non-inclusive (73%).
The Conapred campaign responds to an order made by the Mexican president, Enrique Peña Nieto, to the institution on May 17, 2016, on the occasion of the International Day against Homophobia.
