Asian visitors were very interested in the great cultural offer of the Yucatecan capital and also stressed that they have a strong interest in academic exchanges as well as tourism.

“I had heard a lot from Mérida through some countrymen and I finally got a chance to meet it and I think it could be the beginning of a much more productive relationship for our peoples,” said the Jiangmen official.

For his part, Mauricio Vila said that it is also expected that this visit will be fruitful in its results and allow to continue increasing those ties already formed between Merida and China.

After the meeting, the mayor and Mr. Liang signed a letter of closer relations and exchange in cultural, economic and educational matters, so that both cities improve their communication.

Mérida, in addition, will have wide diffusion in China through printed and televising means.

After the meeting, the general coordinator of Community Policy, Víctor Hugo Lozano Poveda, said that Mérida seeks to increase the number of Chinese visitors to the city and that they consider Mérida as a tourist option.

“Now Mérida as a city is emerging more than Mexico may sound like a country in tourism. We are very proud that the work we have done in coordination with the Chinese Peninsula Association of Yucatan is already bearing the first fruits,” he said.

Jiangmen is a city in the province of Guandong (Canton) with 1 million 480 thousand inhabitants, according to 2010 data.

In an interview, he explained that the delegation is headed by Fuming Liang, Deputy Secretary General of the Jiangmen Municipal People’s Government; Deputy Secretary-General of the Jiangmen Wuyi Overseas Friendship Association, Zhihong Ye;  and the Section Chief of the Jiangmen Foreign Affairs Bureau, Guoan Zhong.

Also, Xiao Chen, Deputy Chief of Section of the Foreign Affairs Bureau of Jiangmen was present; among others.
