Sea Turtle Week marks beginning of protection season in Tulum’s sanctuary

TULUM — With the celebration of the Sea Turtle Week officially began the season of care and nesting protection in the Xcacel sanctuary, as well as in the tourist area of Tulum.

During her speech, the undersecretary of Environmental Policy of the Ministry of the Environment, Graciela Saldaña Fraire, remarked the importance of the efforts being made in the northern municipalities for the conservation of sea turtles, a species in danger of extinction and for which she thanked the municipality’s leaders for their willingness to strengthen the protection activities of the species.

For his part, the municipal director of Ecology, Francisco Chan Chable, who was in representation of the president, Romi Dzul Caamal, emphasized the disposition that the administration has to work in favor of environmental programs, especially in the conservation of menaced species in as the sea turtle.

During the beginning of the turtle nesting season, workshops were carried out on the topic of care and preservation of chelonians, as well as recognize the help of civil associations and private initiative involved in care and protection programs.
