New Cancun-Baltimore flights to be offered by Spirit Airlines

Spirit Airlines plans to add flights to Cancun from Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport starting in November.

Cancun will be the airline’s first international route at BWI, the airport said Monday May 22. Spirit shifted its regional operations in September 2012 to the airport, where it has grown from serving two destinations to 19. Flights to Cancun start Nov. 9.

Spirit operates flights to about 60 markets in the U.S., Latin America and the Caribbean.

More than 25.1 million passengers flew from BWI last year, setting an annual record. The airport has been investing heavily in its international concourse as it seeks more passenger growth.

It recently finished a $125 million project that added a connector to the international concourse from the domestic concourses and created a new, larger secutiry checkpoint. Another roughly $100 million will be spent to expand and renovate the international concourse.
