The new Municipal Urban Development Program was scheduled to be submitted to the City Council on Friday April 7, after a process that began in February 2016 with the conjunction of opinions from different sectors of society, including colleges, business chambers, civil associations and other interested citizens.
The Program will form a collective vision of the planning required to define the order of the capital of the state.
An evaluation of the current MUDP, from September 2014 to August 2015, has served as a starting point for identifying key issues to be discussed. It was proposed in the previous work tables that the new MUDP contribute to the city vision for the year 2040, with analysis on the real problems for its good performance in the short, medium and long term.
Andrés Zapata Ruz, president of the Yucatan School of Architects, said that he is part of the Municipal Council of Urban Development and through many work days, public roundtables and official sessions, the Urban Development Program was developed and will be presented on Friday April 7.
He added that Mérida is growing and is a city with a lot of inhabitants and investment, which has generated an urban sprawl and population increase, problems to which the City gives attention through policies embodied in the MUDP.
Carlos Erosa Burgos, president of the College of Civil Engineers of Yucatan, said that the group he represents has worked really close with the City Council through IMPLAN. The Urban Development Plan that is now presented is the result of citizen participation that allows it to have the vision to address the problems of Mérida, he said.
In his opinion, the most relevant problems of the city include the intense traffic of vehicles and the expansion. Merida is growing very fast, with an urban space similar to that of Guadalajara but with 20% to 25% of population, and that indicates that we need urgently to redistribute our population, he said.
There is already progress in the MUDP, he said.
