Psychiatric specialist and former director of the Psychiatric Hospital of Yucatan Arsenio Rosado Franco said that in the state 12 percent of the population has some kind of mental problem and one of three people will require specialized care at some stage in their life.
However, public policies to address this type of disease have a historical debt to Yucatecan society as a result of the insufficient budget that is granted annually, he said.
Rosado Franco pointed out the lack of a correct public policy to address this health problem in the state, because everything is done on an improvised basis and without an efficient prevention program.
In addition, health institutions do not have accurate records of the cases that are presented, nor does the state have a research capacity to detect the indicators and keep them updated, but above all to give full attention to these diseases, he said.
In 2016 220 cases of suicide were recorded in Yucatan, a figure that showed a 20 percent increase over 2015 when 190 deaths were reported.
The care of people with emotional conflicts and potential suicides focuses on a medical institution that is already obsolete, so it is suggested that there is legislation that addresses, seriously and in a concrete way.
And despite the fact that these indicators show that the state has historically occupied the top national places in cases of suicide, there is no planning or follow-up of the long-term programs, since in each state administration, every six years, they are modified. And the changeover breaks with the advances made previously.
This situation, he said, reveals the lack of political will and budget to address a health problem that affects society in Yucatan. Among the deficiencies is a psychiatric hospital that has a model of care that fails to meet the requirements, as it has neither the appropriate infrastructure nor sufficient resources.
