The director of the Faculty of Architecture of the Autonomous University of Yucatan (UADY), Alfredo Alonzo Aguilar, said that a city like Mérida should be democratized to expand open spaces, since, he explained, a city should not be hostage to automobiles.

The specialist emphasized that the activities carried out by the Ayuntamiento of Mérida show that citizens want more spaces to walk, to make the city their own and to take ownership of these spaces.

“A city must grow, not only for motor vehicles, not only for autos, but also for pedestrians, for bicycle riders, because the citizens are the owners of these spaces and not motorized vehicles,” he said.

Attending the opening of the 8th Meeting of Mexican Cities of the Ibero-American Center for Urban Strategic Development, which opened Tuesday March 28 in Merida, Alonzo Aguilar said that for the first time in a city in Europe, like Stockholm, more citizens are using bicycles than motor vehicles, but this is thanks to measures carried out by the municipality.

“It is important that our cities are more accessible to citizens and not to motor vehicles,” he said, since today we see the success of the events held by the City of Mérida, which would have to be many more, because the citizen when he leaves Walking their city, demonstrates their sense of appropriation, protection and belonging, “he said.
