Plane crash near Chichen Itza seriously injures pilot

No fatalities were reported in the plane crash near Chichen Itza airport Wednesday night.

The crash seriously injured the pilot of the Piper plane with registration number N116-TH. Besides the pilot, Daniel Cano, the plane’s passengers were a family of four (a couple and two minors). The passengers suffered minor injuries.

They left Cancun at 6 p.m. bound for Merida. Due to engine failure, the pilot asked for permission to land at Chichen airport, but the plane crashed on a hillside, almost half a kilometer before reaching the runway.Due to the impact, the pilot was unconscious, trapped in the cabin. He reportedly suffered serious spine injuries.

The rescue was coordinated by Commander Jorge Flores Martinez, Fire Director of the SSP.
