Described as funny and deeply moving, A.J. Gurney’s play “Love Letters” will be presented at Merida English Library at 7:30 p.m. Friday Feb. 24. The play, presented as reader’s theater, stars Nancy Hoag and Michael Catlin. Tickets are on sale in advance at the library and at the door.

On Saturday Feb. 25 at 11:30 a.m., Dr. Luis Ramirez Carrillo will give a free lecture on the Lebanese Experience in the Yucatan. The lecture will focus on how, between 1880 and 1930, a wave of Lebanese immigrants, fleeing oppression by the Ottoman Empire, crossed the Atlantic and arrived on Mexico’s eastern shores, and on their cultural (and culinary) influence on the peninsula.

As part of its 20th anniversary celebration, on Wednesday March 1, there will be an event celebrating MEL history as a supporter of the artist community in Merida.  Before the MEL building became a library, it was used for several years as an art studio, gallery and art school by 3 young Merida artists, and was known as El Estudio.  On March 1 from 5 to 8:30 p.m., MEL will be celebrating its history as a supporter of the artist community by featuring the art of these three artists. The show will hang for approximately 6 weeks.

Merida English Library is located on calle 53 between 66 y 68. Call 999.924.8401 for further information.
