In order to have better infrastructure and image, the Merida City Council ordered the installation of more than six thousand street lights in the main parks and avenues of the city, a project that will invest approximately one million pesos ($50,000 USD), said Jorge Montalvo Duarte, director of Municipal Public Services (SPM).
As part of the work to improve façades of the Historic Center, a change of lighting was implemented in some areas of the city, which during the first stage was carried out in the heart of downtown Mérida.
The official said that the change is made in response to various requests that the City has received on improving lighting in some points of the Historic Center and parks of the city, as they are completely or partially obscure.
In order not to affect traffic, the City Council will carry out the works gradually and at night. He emphasized that about six thousand lights will be installed in the various parks of the city, and these lamps have a modern technology and offer greater clarity. He explained that it is a technology that highlights the colors of buildings and provides better light quality than the previous ones. Later it is also intended to implement these lamps in the outer neighborhoods of the city.
He said that sometimes “we find parks that are very dark and lonely, which creates fear to the residents, but these lamps will provide greater security by providing better quality of light.”
To conclude Montalvo Duarte explained that the technology of the lighting will replace sodium vapor with one using an additive of ceramic vapor.
