The Institutional Revolutionary Party, its worried eye on the 2018 presidential election, is in the process of preparing to give the boot to Quintana Roo ex-Gov. Roberto Borge and another ex-governor.
One of the party’s national council members has called for the expulsion of both Roberto Borge of Quintana Roo and César Duarte of Chihuahua since last June, as accusations of corruption have become prominent in the daily news.
Armando Barajas told the newspaper Reforma that the PRI is getting ready to start discussing the suspension and possible expulsion of both politicians from its ranks.
“A resolution is about to be reached in both cases . . . it’s a matter of days before the party’s national justice commission meets and decides,” he said.
Barajas believes there is enough information available to show that both ex-governors acted with a lack of probity and that their expulsion is warranted.
“What’s being considered in both cases is that the lack of probity in their performance as governors has impaired the party’s credibility, in detriment to those affiliated with it.”
That’s only one of the reasons Borge and Duarte could be expelled, he continued. “There are two hypotheses, lack of probity or having committed crimes while in office.”
With regard to the time it has taken his party to decide to discuss suspending or expelling the politicians, about five months, Barajas said the organization needed to gather all the information available about the alleged crimes.
He also noted that the expulsion of former Veracruz governor Javier Duarte occurred “expeditiously” given the official intervention in the case by the Attorney General’s office. He was kicked out of the party in October for failing to act with integrity in carrying out his duties.
