CANCUN — The state governments of Yucatan, Quintana Roo and Campeche have pledged to make the Yucatan Peninsula a GMO-free region through the signing of a cooperative pact during the COP13 Global Biodiversity Summit, taking place in Cancun this week.
The declaration will be made through the states’ ministries of environment, said Quintana Roo’s minister of environment and forestry, Alfredo Arellano Guillermo.
“We’re going to sign a pact with the state governments of Yucatan and Campeche. The pact expresses, among other things, our states’ collaboration and dedication on matters such as biodiversity and declaring the Yucatan Peninsula a GMO-free region,” he said.

The pact is expected to be signed on Dec. 10 during the 5th Global Biodiversity Summit of Cities and Subnational Governments, which gathers city and state level officials from around the world to strengthen the global conribution of cities and states in protecting biodiversity and the effective management of ecosystems.
