Tourist destinations in Yucatan now offer a greater number of different activities to national and international visitors, providing options and alternatives to all kinds of travelers.
Haciendas, Magical Towns and archeological sites had more visitors this year than other attractions such as beaches and cenotes.
José Carlos González Sosa, of the Mexican Chamber of Hotels in Yucatan, said: “people are no longer just looking for fun and relaxation, now they are more interested in the culture and history of the region, they want to know more about the Maya and their great cultural achievements involving astronomy, architecture and mathematics. ”
“Travelers usually visit beaches and cenotes to refresh themselves after they tour a colonial town or archaeological site”.
“A new tourist phenomenon has emerged, national and foreign tourists are adopting Yucatan as a “knowledge tourist destination”, and using it as a stopover on their way to the Riviera Maya” González continued.
Chichén Itzá, Valladolid, Celestún and Izamal have been the most visited places in the regions during the last three vacation periods (Semana Santa, Summer vacation and Christmas holidays).
González Sosa pointed out that “the promotion made by the Hotels and Commerce Chambers , as well as government authorities, invites the tourists to live an experience”.
Two of the most visited tourst activities are the light and sound shows of the archaeological zones of Chichén Itzá and Uxmal.
It is expected that by next year these light and sound shows will be implemented in more archeological areas such as Dzibilchaltún and Ek Balam, in order to diversify the Cultural Tourism offer.
