CANCUN — Three men drowned in separate accidents in Cancun and Riviera Maya in the past week, all reportedly due to choppy waters and strong undertows.
One man, a Russian tourist, drowned at Kilometer 16.5 of the Cancun Hotel Zone the afternoon of Wednesday Nov. 23. The 46-year-old visitor identified as Mohamed G. was a guest at Grand Oasis, arriving with his 42-year-old wife and two children to Cancun for a holiday.
Both husband and wife entered the water to swim when they were quickly swept away by strong currents. An on-duty lifeguard ran into the water pulling out the female, however when he returned for the man, he was already without vital signs.
Police and medical officials arrived on scene to pronounce the deceased. The area was cordoned off while the body was transferred to the Forensic Medical Service in Cancun.
A second drowning on Thursday Nov. 24 was also caused by choppy waters and strong undertow. A local 28-year-old man drowned while swimming at a Playa del Carmen beach.
The accident occurred at 2:30 p.m. in the beach area of 88th Street. Emergency 911 was called when witnesses spotted a lifeless man in the water. Officials arrived to the scene to find the man had already died.
Meanwhile on Monday, the body of an Argentine tourist diving off Cozumel was discovered and transported to shore by marine rescue officials. Although rescue personnel administered first aid, the 71- year-old victim could not be resuscitated.
