Cancun and New York City are this year’s most popular domestic and international destinations for Thanksgiving travel amongst Americans, according to Allianz Global Assistance’s Top 10 Holiday Destinations Report.
Allianz Global Assistance reviewed more than 1.3 million plans made by Americans for travel during Thanksgiving (between 11/19/2016 – 11/27/2016). According to the report, the most popular destination for Americans is New York City. The top 10 domestic destinations ranked by popularity include: New York City, Los Angeles, Orlando, San Francisco, Boston, Atlanta, Chicago, Newark, Las Vegas and Fort Lauderdale.
Internationally, the American traveler is heading to Cancun for Thanksgiving followed by London, San Juan, Tokyo, Paris, Puerto Vallarta, San Jose Del Cabo, Hong Kong, Aruba and Sydney.

“Thanksgiving is a popular time to travel with family,” said Daniel Durazo, director of communications for Allianz Global Assistance USA. “While it’s great for bonding, the high volume of travelers and uncertain weather conditions can make an unexpected trip delay or cancelation all the more likely and travel insurance all the more important.”
Allianz Global Assistance offers travel insurance through most major U.S. airlines, leading travel agents, online travel agencies and directly to consumers.
Methodology: The data of U.S. travelers’ booking intent to purchase flights around Thanksgiving was gathered by analyzing the number of customers that went through the online booking process of airfare and package paths for partners offering Allianz Global Assistance travel insurance to generate itineraries for travel around Thanksgiving (11/19/2016 – 11/27/2016). Below is a snapshot of that data to top U.S. and international cities.
