The disappearance last week of a 52-year-old American resident of Mazatlán remains a mystery.
But the newspaper El Sol de Mazatlán reported this week that bank cards owned by O’Neil Patrick McGean have been used at various ATMs in the city, and that he received a large number of text messages the night he disappeared.
The messages have led to speculation that McGean was drawn into a trap and has been kidnapped.
He was last heard from at 8:00pm Tuesday when he told a friend he was on his way to meet someone at the Hotel Punta Pacífico.
His vehicle, a white Chevrolet Spark, was found by friends Saturday morning near the Los Zarapes restaurant in the heart of the tourist district. According to information in a statement released yesterday by friends the car had been parked there for several days.
The statement described the missing man as a “reliable, dependable business owner” who would not have disappeared without telling them and would not have left his dogs unattended. They also said he had no history of involvement in or use of drugs.
For many years McGean managed the Old Mazatlán Condos in the historic center of the city and two years ago opened Café Playa Sur. Born in the state of Maryland, he lived most of his adult life in Bisbee, Arizona, before moving to Mazatlán in 2006.
Local and state authorities have been notified of McGean’s disappearance, as has the U.S. State Department and the FBI.
