A tragic accident took place on the Mérida – Progreso highway around 7 a.m. Wednesday October 12th.
An unidentified male perished inside his Nissan Sentra, license plates YZL 8786, after colliding with a truck that crushed the compact vehicle against the highway railing on top of the Xcanatun bridge.
After the impact, the car caught fire and the driver was not able to get out.
The truck was found a few miles down the road empty, the truck driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene. Police are still looking for the suspect, but no arrests regarding this tragedy have been made so far.
The name of the victim has not been revealed by local authorites yet.
According to Sipse Milenio and Yucatan Ahora news websites the deseased was a student of the Anahuac Mayab University, but Diario de Yucatán just clarified that the name of the victim is Alfonso Martín Martínez Esquivel, he was a 24 year-old married man, and was not an Anahuac Mayab student.
