17 Cuban rafters land on Isla Mujeres; 7 escape capture

ISLA MUJERES, Q. Roo — A group of 17 Cuban migrants landed on a beach in Isla Mujeres in Quintana Roo.

Their arrival was captured in a video showing the Cubanss running across the beach toward the interior of the island to avoid being caught by the authorities.

One of them said they had been at sea 7 days sailing aboard a raft that had come from Batabanó, on the south coast of Cuba.

About 11:30 am Tuesday Oct. 18, the 911 emergency dispatchers alerted officers of the Preventive Police on the sighting of a vessel. Police captured ten people and seven others were able to evade the officers and disappeared into the brush.

The detained Cubans were turned over to the National Migration Institute, which must define their legal status and for them to be deported to Cuba.
