PLAYA DEL CARMEN — Permits for the proposed $156 million USD Dreamworks theme park are in the application process, pushing forward the mega-project connected with the noted U.S. animation and film studio.
Tourism company Turquesa has initiated the permit procedure to move ahead construction for the Dreamworks theme park project. The Mexico Dreamworks project was initially proposed in June 2014, however, it wasn’t until last year that the announcement was made that the park would be built in the Riviera Maya.
The Directorate General of Environmental Impact and Risk approved a change of land use under the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat). This change of land use means the project plan will see more than 1.1 million square meters of Riviera Maya land converted to host the mega-project, which will consist of three hotels, a shopping center, Museum of Anthropology and two theme parks, one Dreampark and one Amikop Thrillpark.
Dreamworks will construct the theme park project in the area of Punta Maroma, just north of Playa del Carmen. Once complete, it is expected to generate 2,000 jobs and attract more than 4.5 million visitors per year.
Combined, the entire project will cost around 3 billion pesos ($156 million USD).
