American Airlines will launch three new flights between the U.S. and Mexico before the end of the year.
Beginning Nov. 4, the carrier will offer flights between Miami and Merida on the Yucatan Peninsula five times a week.
Then on Dec. 15, daily service between Los Angeles and Cancun and Puerto Vallarta will commence.
American is joined by Delta and Southwest in increasing service to Mexico as a more liberal U.S-Mexico aviation agreement takes effect. Under the new arrangement, there are no limits on the number of carriers that can serve any city pair. The previous agreement limited route penetration to either two or three airlines from each country.
American Airlines new nonstop flights from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport to Merida provide a valuable travel option for visitors to Yucatan.
On the Miami-Merida route, American will compete with Aeromexico, according to the website Flight Connections.
American will compete with five carriers on the LAX-Cancun route and four carriers on the LAX-Puerto Vallarta route.
Among the competitors on both of those routes will be Southwest, which will begin those services on Dec. 4, just 11 days before American.
