The Riviera Maya has become the preferred tourist destination in Mexico, overshadowing other popular choices including Cancun and Los Cabos, according to recent statistics.
The news comes from the Mexican Association of Hotels and Motels: during the first six months of the year, hotels in the Riviera Maya held an 89 percent hotel occupancy rate, more than the 82 percent Cancun held. However, both rates exceed the national average.
President of the Mexican Hotel Association, Rafael García, explains, “The best-known beaches in the country are full. Colonial cities are being visited by hundreds of foreigners and thousands of Mexicans, and adventure tourism is booming.”
David Rebolledo, general manager of Best Day, says, “In large, this is because the exchange rate favors domestic destinations. Although the peso lost value against the dollar, Americans find it easier to take a flight to Cancun, Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos.”
Last year, the International Tourism Organization ranked Mexico as ninth in the world for its attractive tourism. This is the third consecutive year that the Riviera Maya has grown in global popularity.
