Modern technology strengthens habanero chili producers in Yucatan

HOCTÚN — The use of the latest technologies for the production of high quality habanero chilis will strengthen the growth of agribusiness in Yucatan and will give impetus to producers, officials say.Investment partners, Francisco Irazoqui Galaviz and Jose Maria Sabín Sabín, recently led a group of visitors around the Protected and Open Peninsula Agriculture company facilities, located on the Hoctún-Tahmek highway.

Governor Rolando Zapata Bello reviewed the technology implemented in greenhouses with the method of hydroponics, with a production capacity of 170 tons per hectare, which means support for the acquisition and marketing of habanero chilis for farmers from nearby regions.

During the visit, it was noted that the Mayan Kisin variety, developed by the Scientific Research Center of Yucatán (CICY, for its acronym in Spanish) and processed from the Science and Technology Park (PCTY, for its acronym in Spanish), has made possible the extraction of natural high purity capsaicin.

It was reported that to obtain a kilo of this substance it is necessary to process a ton of habanero chilis. In that regard, businessmen noted that thanks to its healing properties, passage would be opened in the pharmaceutical industry, as an analgesic at national and international level.
