Internet users in Mexico and Brazil are far more worried about fraud like identity theft and credit card fraud compared to those in the US and Canada, according to a study from market research company Aite Group, sponsored by electronic banking and payment solutions provider ACI Worldwide.
This is likely because Brazil and Mexico have higher fraud rates and less regulatory structure
For example, 21% of internet users in the US said they were very concerned about check fraud, but in Mexico, nearly three times as many respondents were very concerned. Similarly, a third of internet users in Canada said they were very concerned about direct debit fraud. To compare, more than double internet users in Mexico felt the same way.
Data breach resulting in comprised account numbers was also big concern for more than three-quarters of internet users in Brazil and Mexico. And 74% of respondents in Brazil, as well as 78% of respondents in Mexico, said they were very concerned about identity theft.
Separate research from the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) looked at whether internet users in Brazil and Mexico trust that their digital activates are not being monitored—and many don’t. Indeed, just 12% of respondents in Mexico said they trust completely that their activities are not being monitored, and a third trust it somewhat. Even fewer respondents in Brazil trust that their activates are not being monitored.
