U.S. President Barack Obama and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto will meet Friday July 22 at the White House.
The White House announced the last-minute visit on Thursday July 14.
Obama and Peña Nieto met in late June in Canada during a summit of North America’s leaders that included Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
The White House says Obama is looking forward to working with Peña Nieto to continue the progress they achieved at the Canada summit.
The leaders will discuss a “range of issues,” the White House said. Mexico said they had a common goal of “deepening the strategic partnership between the countries.”
The meeting comes as presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has threatened to withdraw from the North American Free Trade Agreement that has tied those two countries with Canada since 1994.
The United States is Mexico’s primary trade partner, with 85 percent of its exports heading north to America.
Trump has promised to build a wall on the U.S. border with Mexico to prevent undocumented migrants from entering the United States.
In a recent interview with CNN, Peña Nieto said Mexico would refuse to pay for the wall.
Coincidentally, Peña Nieto will visit the United States the same day that presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has promised to announce his choice for vice president.
