International Congress of Pediatric Neurosurgery held in Mérida

With the participation of 40 speakers and professors from Europe, North and South America, the International Congress of Pediatric Neurosurgery was held in the auditorium of the Regional Hospital of High Specialty of the Yucatan Peninsula (Hospital Regional de Alta Especialidad de Yucatán: HRAEPY), sponsored by the International Society of Pediatric Neurosurgery (ISPN).

Jaime Torres Corzo, president of the Mexican Society of Neurological Surgery, said that the main topics discussed during the course, which concluded on Saturday July 9th, were hydrocephalus (excess fluid in the brain) particularly from an endoscopic approach, spinal dysraphism (defects of the neural tube such as “spina bifida”) as well as posterior fossa tumors and epilepsy surgery.

“Science advances quickly. Back in the day, a doctor who finished a postgraduate speciality had enough knowledge to work for the rest of his life, but not anymore, today technology evolves constantly, and academic knowledge is at hand for anyone with Internet access. Therefore, the neurosurgeon has to keep updated in both disciplines, science and knowledge. Hence the importance of this course, that brings the best speakers on the subject, with the latest advances in the field,” Torres Corzo explained.

José Luis Lozano Marín, Neurosurgeon from the Regional High Specialty Hospital, was the organizer of the International Course of the International Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery, for the first time held in the peninsula.

For his part, José Luis Lozano Marín, local organizer of the congress, declared that this one-of-a-kind event was attended by doctors and specialists from the “National Institute of Pediatrics” and the “Federico Gomez Children’s Hospital of Mexico”; as well as specilists from Europe and South America.
