Members of the dissident teachers’ union CNTE are going on the warpath in response to the weekend arrest of two leaders of the Oaxaca local Section 22.

General secretary Rubén Núñez has been charged with money laundering and secretary Francisco Villalobos with aggravated robbery, proceedings that have nothing to do with the union’s protests against education reform, according to Interior Secretary Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong.

He said the two had been implicated in the diversion of funds belonging to union members in Oaxaca.

A spokesman for the Attorney General’s office said Núñez and other leaders had laundered 132 million pesos (equivalent to US $7 million) between 2013 and 2015, during the time Núñez had control over Oaxaca’s education institute.

The Section 22 leader himself is accused of laundering more than 24 million pesos, money that was used for personal expenses and to finance the union’s protest activities.

Arrest orders have been issued for another 24 union members.

As soon as the leaders were arrested, the CNTE called for a general strike throughout Mexico, protest marches and a strengthening of its camp in the Plaza de la Ciudadela in Mexico City.

There were marches and blockades on Monday June 13 in Mexico City, Oaxaca, Guerrero, Chiapas and Michoacan; and it seems like these demonstrations will continue in many Mexican cities.
