Frida Kahlo Museum to open in PDC early next year

In the first quarter of 2017, the Frida Kahlo Museum will open its doors in Playa del Carmen, the second in the world dedicated to the painter, which will have in its gallery original work of one of the most famous and iconographic women worldwide.

At a press conference, Ofelia Martinez García, general director of Red Bank, who will head museology and curatorship, said they have begun preparations to make architectural changes to the building that will house the museum, which will be located next to the Frida Kahlo restaurant, in downtown Playa del Carmen.

She added that they are making negotiations to call in loans of the original works with private collectors, but will also have talks with Bank of Mexico, the institution that protects part of the work of Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo Calderon.

The museum also plans to open its galleries for artists to reinterpret the work of Coyoacan, but demands will be asked on the quality of the artwork.

Preferential price for Quintana Roo residents

Although it is only an approximation, the promoters of this project hope that it will be a $25 to $30 million pesos investment, and is expected to have a cost for tourists of $10-13 USD, with a cheaper price for Quintana Roo locals.

This would be the third museum in Riviera Maya. The other two are the Prehistory Museum, which is located near the cenote Dos Ojos in Tulum; and the 3D Museum which is located in the center of Playa del Carmen.

Gerardo Alonso, project manager from Red Bank, said that the museum is structured as a civil association, which has established contacts with other foundations, governments, universities, and civil society to carry out its strategic alliances.
