World’s largest cruise ship to visit Cozumel in November

COZUMEL, Q.Roo – The world’s largest cruise ship is expected to land at Cozumel in November of this year.

Harmony of the Seas by Royal Caribbean, is expected to dock at Isla Cozumel for the first time in November of 2016. The massive cruise ship, which to date is considered the world’s largest, measures 1,188 feet (362 meters) in length with the capacity to carry 6,780 guests plus 2,100 crew.

With 16 decks, the ship is larger than the Eiffel Tower is tall and holds the record for being the widest cruise ship ever built. On board are 2,500 staterooms, 20 dining venues, 23 swimming pools and a park with more than 10,500 plants and 20 trees.

The ship showcases 11,252 works of art and features a 10-story waterslide called Ultimate Abyss, complete with a 100-foot drop. On board guests can also enjoy a live production of the musicalGrease, as well as diving performances in “the deepest pool at sea”.

The vessel took 32 months to construct in a French shipyard, cost $1 billion US and weighs 220,000 gross tons.

Managing director UK and Ireland for Royal Caribbean International, Stuart Leven, explained, “Harmony of the Seas is the world’s largest cruise ship. Bigger can be beautiful when it allows you to put so many great facilities on board to allow people to have a great holiday at sea.

“Cruising is changing. It’s becoming a holiday for all the family, it’s not just white table cloths and ties at dinnertime. Now, the sort of holiday you get at all-inclusive resorts on land can be replicated on the seas.”

He added, “My favorite facility is the robotic bartenders where you go in with an iPad to place your order and they will mix your cocktail. We are really pushing the boundaries. It’s all about variety. When you have a ship of this scale, you can offer so many things.”

Harmony of the Seas is offering a 7-day Cozumel route in the Western Caribbean departing Fort Lauderdale on November 19 and arriving in Cozumel on November 26.
